Perl (the Practical Extraction and Report Language, or the Pathologically Eclectic Rubbish Lister), is an all-purpose, open source (free software) interpreted language and a powerful scripting tool, which enables you to manage files, create reports, edit text, and perform many other tasks on a number of platforms.
Perl was invented in 1987 by Larry Wall at NASA’s jet propulsion laboratory, as a way to make report processing easier. It was originally developed as a utility programming language for the UNIX operating system, and used only by technical people working with UNIX.
Perl is not the easiest of programming languages to learn because it is designed for flexibility. It is used primarily as a scripting language. Perl is widely used by those seeking to develop CGI programs. Perl’s several features make is easier to work with than many other languages. Like Perl does not require the inclusion of lengthy headers at the start of the program. Also, no separate compilation process is required to translate Perl language statements into computer machine language. Perl also provide several features for working with character strings
All Perl programs are portable. Perl applications can be easily moved between Web servers that run on different system.
I hope this short introductory info has helped you to love perl; I will be posting more about perl in the near future. Please don't forget to leave your comments below.
